Fun and fast paced read。 The characters motivations were clear and reasonable。 The dynamic between them was nuanced and felt like real relationships。 Every choice the characters made didn't feel like they carried the weight of the realm on their shoulders which was a nice change of pace from other dnd novels I've read。 The easter eggs from the greater Forgotten Realms lore were effective while still being approachable to new readers。 Gave it five stars as it's the most fun I've had reading a dnd Fun and fast paced read。 The characters motivations were clear and reasonable。 The dynamic between them was nuanced and felt like real relationships。 Every choice the characters made didn't feel like they carried the weight of the realm on their shoulders which was a nice change of pace from other dnd novels I've read。 The easter eggs from the greater Forgotten Realms lore were effective while still being approachable to new readers。 Gave it five stars as it's the most fun I've had reading a dnd book in a while。 Also made me excited for the movie this story is a prequel of。 Thanks for the read。 。。。more

It reads like a very well run D&D campaign with perfect characterizations, all the while being totally accessible to those who have never played a game in their lives。

What a fun adventure。 And still enjoyable for someone that don't know dnd。 Now I'm really curious for more books like this one。 It reads like a roleplaying adventure and never gets "save the world"-dark。 What a fun adventure。 And still enjoyable for someone that don't know dnd。 Now I'm really curious for more books like this one。 It reads like a roleplaying adventure and never gets "save the world"-dark。 。。。more

The Road To Neverwinter was a very fun and easy to read novel。 I wish all fantasy was like this。 The writing was outstanding with solid third-person, past-tense and no noticeable head-hopping。 The characters were interesting and the plot full of twists and turns。 The narrative was brisk and never bogged down in exposition or excess characterization。 My only issues were a few jarring moments。 Mail (as in letters) in a fantasy world?

This book was so much fun! I’ve never played D&D before or read any D&D novels but I’m a big fan of Jaleigh Johnson’s other books so I was excited to read this。 It was a fast paced read with engaging characters and thrilling adventures。 I can’t wait to see the movie now!

Read because: I'm actually really hyped for the D&D movie and saw Chris Pine's handsome face on the cover of the book so I thought, "Why the heck not?"Thoughts: I'm starting to think I've become very easy to impress, in some ways, ever since I started reading again。 Perhaps if I had read this book three years ago, I would've reviewed it pretty harshly。 As far as fantasy novels go, it's a solid。。。 mid。 It has all the generic fantasy trappings, and also all the fantasy pitfalls (among which is my Read because: I'm actually really hyped for the D&D movie and saw Chris Pine's handsome face on the cover of the book so I thought, "Why the heck not?"Thoughts: I'm starting to think I've become very easy to impress, in some ways, ever since I started reading again。 Perhaps if I had read this book three years ago, I would've reviewed it pretty harshly。 As far as fantasy novels go, it's a solid。。。 mid。 It has all the generic fantasy trappings, and also all the fantasy pitfalls (among which is my #1 enemy, anachronistic and generally-out-of-place language)。 But having said that, does it also have a bunch of losers meeting and deciding to work together? Yes。 Does it have the funniest will-they-won't-they banter between Edgin and Forge? Yes。 Does it have a sneaky thieving lite child? Yes。 Does it have a sorcerer who clearly doesn't know his own strength and who's a precious darling discovering himself while discovering the fact that his worth isn't intrinsically tied to his magic performance and also he's got friends he can count on? Yes。 Does it have a barbarian who could just kill for a potato? Yes。 And most importantly, probably, isn't this book exactly how D&D campaigns go? Because I, for one, often caught myself thinking about the players I know and their characters, and thinking, "Ah, yep, my group would do that。 They' really would go for broke at the crucial moment, trying to get bigger loot, and just land themselves in the worst situations as a reward。"Bonus points for the fact that I could picture Hugh Grant so clearly whenever Forge did or said anything, and it just made me the happiest camper。 So, to me, this book is a 5-star experience in a 3-star package, so let's call it 4 stars then。Would I read a sequel: specifically about Edgin's little crew, yes。 Just sort of generally in this specific D&D scenario, also yes。 I know there's one about the druid as well, so I'm gonna read that too, never fear。 。。。more

where do i begin? this book was a raunchy, invigorating, wild trip。 right from the start i fell in love with edgin, kira, and holga。 it was always such a treat to see more and more characters from the film pop up and lend themselves to the story as well! even so, this book didn’t lean too much on fan service。 even if it didn’t have those well placed cameos, it would’ve still been an amazing story to read。the plot is fast-paced, but not fast enough to lose yourself and get confused。 the balance b where do i begin? this book was a raunchy, invigorating, wild trip。 right from the start i fell in love with edgin, kira, and holga。 it was always such a treat to see more and more characters from the film pop up and lend themselves to the story as well! even so, this book didn’t lean too much on fan service。 even if it didn’t have those well placed cameos, it would’ve still been an amazing story to read。the plot is fast-paced, but not fast enough to lose yourself and get confused。 the balance between humor and heart is perfect。 even if you aren’t a fan of d&d, there’s still enough help in the book to understand all of the references without much issue。 and if you are a fan? then is perfect campaign fuel for you! the characters are a blessing and so convincing to follow。 just like the druid’s call, this book makes me so excited to watch the movie come next friday! 。。。more

This book was just plain fun! I loved all of the characters and the themes of found-family。 I will say it had the typical "forgettable" middle section; but that doesn't mean it wasn't interesting, just not as memorable as the start and especially the end!It reads like playing a game of DnD。 But almost, most importantly for this type of book, it's absolutely stand-alone。 It does a little set up for the movie at the end, but you could only read this book and be content with the full arc。 I'm excit This book was just plain fun! I loved it! It's very D&D but it's also very character-centric。 Most characters were well-rounded and had interesting backstories and development。 I wasn't fond of the spellcaster character - that one seemed a little one-dimensional to me, with a predictable character arc, but it didn't detract from the enjoyment of the book。 I loved it! This book feels like a D&D campaign with your best friends turned into a novel。 I can't wait to see this crew on the screen。 They are destined for the greatness they seek! I sincerely hope there are more books to come as well! 。。。more

This is a book about a single dad trying to raise his daughter the best he can。 And he’s also a thief。 His co-parent is a kind-hearted and deadly barbarian who always has his back, and the two befriend a con-man and a sorcerer to help with their heists。 This is a wonderful fantasy story full of humor, heists, and harrowing adventure。One of the best things about this novel is that it feels like D&D without being too obvious。 If you have never played D&D and don’t know anything about the Forgotten This is a book about a single dad trying to raise his daughter the best he can。 And he’s also a thief。 His co-parent is a kind-hearted and deadly barbarian who always has his back, and the two befriend a con-man and a sorcerer to help with their heists。 This is a wonderful fantasy story full of humor, heists, and harrowing adventure。One of the best things about this novel is that it feels like D&D without being too obvious。 If you have never played D&D and don’t know anything about the Forgotten Realms (the name of the world D&D is set in), you will be able to enjoy this book easily。 If you have played D&D, you’ll recognize many of the monsters and tropes, and if you’re familiar with the Forgotten Realms specifically, there’s even more fun easter eggs in store。 I’ve been a fan of the Forgotten Realms ever since I read the first few books of The Legend of Drizz’t many years ago, so returning to the setting with fresh eyes was a delight, and Jaleigh Johnson did not disappoint! All characters are lovable; some are more mysterious than others, but all of them are fun, intriguing, and absolutely unique。 The character development with each one is clear, if subtle in some cases, and you grow to love every one。 Even the minor characters and villains are fun, with distinct features and gimmicks。The heists were fantastic。 They were all dynamic, entertaining, and full of comedy and just enough stakes to make them out you on the edge of your seat。 They added so much to the spirit of the book, and they were so incredibly fun。The battle sequences in this book, however, are hit or miss。 There aren’t many, which is nice since this is a book about thieves, and when they do happen upon a battle it’s usually by accident, so it never seems out of place。 Most of the time there’s a sense of emotional stakes to keep us invested, and when there isn’t, Johnson adds humor and fun to it。 The exception to this is the final battle; it’s not done poorly by any means, but the stakes didn’t feel as high as they should have because Kira wasn’t involved and we know these characters are going to live。 And speaking of Kira, it seemed inappropriate for Edgin to take his nine-year-old daughter on heists with him。 It made sense when it was just Edgin, Holga, and Kira, but after that I couldn’t find a reason why it was necessary。 They didn’t need her for anything specific on the last heist; she helped with a few things, but nothing anyone else couldn’t have done。 It is addressed this in the novel, and Edgin does feel remorse about it, but it just felt odd。 My last minor gripe is that our main character never seems to learn how to fight。 It’s clear that he’s adept at thieving and he’s useful in heists, but when it comes to combat, Johnson doesn’t really know what to do with him。Minor grievances aside, this book was fantastic。 The writing takes itself just seriously enough for the reader to become attached to these characters and their arcs, but not so much so that it feels out of place in the more humorous moments。 It’s a great fantasy, a wonderful D&D story, and fun for everyone to enjoy。 Definitely pick this one up! 。。。more
